Giving a pint of blood or being a blood drive volunteer can give a student at Ohio State University a chance to win a scholarship.
To honor students who show special commitment to the community service, particularly through the volunteer blood donor program, the Central Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross is launching a new program: the Drive to Serve Scholarship. Students at Ohio State are eligible if they have participated in the blood program as a donor or volunteer.
The Drive to Serve Scholarship is funded through a grant to the American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region.
“We were very excited when a corporation in our community donated funds to start a scholarship program,” said Rodney Wilson, a spokesperson for the Central Ohio Region. “It’s one way we can show how much we appreciate the contributions of teens who help plan blood drives, give the gift of life, and serve as volunteers at the drives.
“We also hope this reinforces to students that they can make a difference. Here in Central Ohio, we need the support of about 650 donors every day. The volunteer blood donation program touches countless lives.”
Five students at Ohio State University will receive scholarships. In this first year of the program for post-secondary schools, scholarships also are being offered Ohio University and Ohio Dominican. At each school, one scholarship will be awarded for every 10,000 students enrolled.
Applications for the Drive to Serve Scholarship at Ohio State University are due no later than May 15. More information, as well as an application form, is available online at BloodSavesLives.org/unischolars.
